Trial Information

What is the JRL:

The JRL is a non-speed roving trial done in groups on Trials bikes only. Groups are divided according to abilities, so that everyone gets the right amount of challenge. Groups are led by experienced Maungatuk riders who ensure that everyone has as much fun as they can stand, gets covered in as much mud as they want and that nobody gets more lost than they need to be. The duration of the ride will be-4-6 hours plus so everyone gets a good ride. You will know that you have ridden!

Why is the JRL: To celebrate the life of James Robert Lawton who inspired us, by doing like he did: going into the “maungies” on trials bikes with our mates, getting covered in mud and having as much fun as a man can stand.

Where: Off Maungakotukutuku Valley Road, Paraparaumu, at the vehicle entrance to Akatarawa Forest Park.

Riding Groups: Groups will be divided into an Expert group, two Intermediate groups, two Clubman groups and a Kids group. Each group will be guided by local riders with a tail end charlie.

When:
Saturday - 9am sign on. 10am start from the Maungie’s car park

Sunday - 10am start from the Maungie’s car park

Cost: $30 per day for adults and we’ll agree on a price for a family - children under 17

What I need: Riding gear consisting of warm/wet weather clothing, tools and spares for minor repairs, 2-3 litres spare fuel required (2 x 1.5 litre empty coke bottles make good fuel bottles), food and drink. All this must be carried with you when riding as you will be away from your vehicle for the day. Note Expert will need 3-4 litres of fuel each.

Camping will be available on site from 4pm Friday night through to lunchtime Sunday. Cooking facilities such as a BBQ will be provided and there are toilets. Please note there is heaps of running water on site but it's not recommended to drink out of the stream so bring some drinking water with you. You're allowed to sleep in the stream if you arrive in the middle of the night and get stuck in the ford. Also BYO other supplies.

Tour de NORTH

Then, the following week, there will be a Northern tour.

Waikuku Lodge has been booked from Sunday 22nd until Friday 27th. Costs for the lodge will be shared but budget around $10-20 p/night. Riding will be around Ruakokoputuna.

On Saturday 28th there is camping and riding at Wayne’s place in Wainuiomata, following by the Ixion Club Trial at Wayne’s on 1st March. Camping available Friday and Saturday night at Wayne’s.
